2021.12.07 19:16 Shawnorsomething Question for all my fellow Hinge users!
23M here and I recently started using Hinge. Having a great time with it so far and it’s such a refreshing take on dating apps. I solicited the help of some male and female friends to create my profile and I think it’s a pretty solid one. Just wondering how others (specifically males) use the app. Do you tend to just “like” different photos and prompts to then begin the conversation after a match happens OR do you send openers/first messages along with the “like”. If it’s a mixed bag, what seems to work the best?
I’ve got premium so I’ll spend a good 30 minutes a day sending messages as the openers pre-match. Occasionally I’ll get a good response, but not all that often. And it’s quite disheartening to send a clever message just to have the other person match with me and say nothing else from that point.
It could definitely be the messages I’m sending though. They tend to just be the first goofy or funny thing that pops in my head but generally has nothing to do with flirting and probably really isn’t all that funny.
Appreciate any and all feedback :)

Hi, just had a small question . I love House of Games, however I haven't seen alot of the episodes, due to my busy schedule. I love Answer Smash and was wondering if there was somewhere where there is a list of different questions that have been featured on the programme over the past few series on maybe a fan site perhaps?

2021.12.07 19:16 Kakuzan That's So Meta! or: Why I Don't Like Meta Commentary & Humor Except When I Do
As suggested by the title, I have mixed feelings on the subject of metafiction and the like. Metafiction and it's corollaries are features of postmodernism, and in a highly simplified amount of words, postmodernism has a characteristic of blurring the lines between reality and fiction whether through deconstruction, the unreliable narrator, and many other experimental or flat out weird storytelling tools.
Postmodernism like many other literary movements waxes and wanes in popularity and prominence, and once again as other movements, trying to make clear distinctions as to when it stops or starts even in retrospect is difficult. Which is to say that while I'm tempted to say that postmodernism has seen a resurgence in no small part due to the internet, I can't claim that with certainty.
Either way, I personally love the blurring between reality and fiction for a number of reasons with one of those reasons being that it can force audiences to question what reality is and what our perceptions of it may or may not imply. With meta humor, the creator(s) can indulge themselves while also letting audiences "in in the joke". So what are my potential issues?
Well, it is right there. It can become too self indulgent to the point of becoming less meaningful. Similarly, I have a particular dislike of the type of humor that amounts to pointing something obvious out while getting all self congratulatory about. And still somehow being wrong about something
not unlike the average redditor. Pointing out that a fictional story is indeed fictional while adding nothing else just serves to bring attention to how shallow the writing is.
Isekai (and perhaps light novels in general) often gets singled out for self indulgence and other quirks, but I don't think it is ever fair to frame one type of story as doing it the most. It is just more obvious since a lot of modern light novels were originally web novels, and most people being crap at writing coupled with the aforementioned observation relating the internet and postmodernism makes it seem egregious. And there is also the tendency for a genre or medium to want the appearance of self awareness as time goes by to attract people with the prospect of being better.
"See? We acknowledge or allude to being a light novel or manga, point out that a light bulb is a light bulb, and we poke fun at ourselves! But we still do all those things we point out, and that's what makes us smarter and better!" Even though I have nitpicks to with the ending of V3, Danganronpa has instances of the many types of meta elements.
In Danganronpa 2, the entire setting takes place in a virtual reality. That's cool and it serves a narrative purpose, but then I guess the writers felt real smart that day since Monokuma responded to the characters realizing the reasons for some of the absurdity by saying "Cuz it's a game!" 3 times straight. On the contrary, while also having an issue with being a bit long and repetitive, V3 actually had something to comment on.
I try to not frame things to suggest that there is a clear right way or wring way to do things when it comes to writing, but goodness gracious. There is a lot more to this and I was tempted to talk about DC's tendency to engage in meta storytelling when it comes to their reboots and relaunches, but that could be for another time since this is long enough.
tldr: I find it obnoxious when some stories try to be meta without putting in actual effort to make it so.
